Understanding PFAS

Frequently asked questions and product care guidelines.

Why is Stio using PFAS-free DWR chemistry?

PFAS are human-made chemicals used as a finishing substance for their superior water-resistance on all kinds of common household items and consumer products, including the coatings on ski jackets or rain shells. Dubbed “forever chemicals” because they take so long to break down, these toxic chemicals can pollute our air, waterways, soil and even our bodies.

As a company that exists to deepen our connection with the outdoors, we feel a strong responsibility to care for the environment and our customers. This is why we're taking action to replace these forever chemicals in our product line by adopting new technologies and sourcing alternative, water-repellent fabrics and coating substances.

Part of this effort has been transitioning from C6 DWR (Durable Water Repellent), which contains PFAS, to C0 DWR, a water-resistant finish that more easily breaks down within the environment by replacing fluorocarbons (PFAS) with less harmful materials, such as silicone.

Are there special care considerations for products that use PFAS-free DWR?

The care instructions are no different than any other jacket, but a little extra care goes a long way with PFAS-free DWR treatments. The major difference with this new, greener chemistry is that, while C0 DWR repels water just as effectively as C6 DWR, it doesn’t stand up as well to oils and dirt. If a garment is not cared for properly over time, these oils and dirt can contaminate the DWR coating and reduce the garment’s overall performance.

Maintaining PFAS-free apparel’s longevity and full waterproof protection requires more consistent wash cycles over the course of a season. Should your garment become soiled by oil or dirt, using a product like Nikwax Tech Wash can remove the dirt, grime and odors and restore its DWR finish, optimizing water repellency.

When is it time to wash my gear?

It all depends on how much you use it, but in order to maintain the Stio-level performance we expect, we recommend washing technical outerwear roughly every 10 uses. The tell-tale signs your gear needs a wash are if the shell fabric looks dirty, it’s wetting out from moisture or precip, or if it’s starting to carry an odor. Regularly washing your technical products will protect their longevity and most effectively maintain performance over time. If you take care of your gear, it will take care of you!

How do I wash technical clothing?

First and foremost, we recommend you wash your garment according to the instructions on the care and content label. Additionally, it is best to use a technical fabric wash like Nikwax according to the directions on the bottle. After your product is done in the wash, shake off any excess water and put it in the dryer on a low heat setting to reactivate the waterproof coating.

How can I tell if my product needs to be re-waterproofed or is defective?

Given the application and performance needs of the new C0 DWR chemistry, chances are your gear probably just needs a wash. When your DWR is working well, water droplets will bead up on the outer shell and slide off the product. After regular use, the DWR can become contaminated and cause water droplets to absorb into the outer shell rather than bead off. This will naturally occur over time with wear and is an indication your DWR needs to be reactivated with a tech wash cycle.

How does Stio assess warranty claims related to waterproofing?

Stio will gladly review all warranty claims, but we ask that you follow the care guide instructions for re-waterproofing your gear with DWR coatings prior to submitting a warranty claim. Please visit our warranty policy for more information on claims.
